A History of Connections

Freestone is Sonoma County’s first historic district and is emerging as a must-visit destination for anyone in search of the secret treasures of Northern California. Situated in an exquisitely scenic valley with pastoral vistas and rolling hills, Miwok tribes made their home in this area of the Sonoma Coast for centuries. In the early 1800s, Russian immigrants grew wheat in the valley to support their northern settlements prior to the issuance of Spanish land grants. This Sonoma coastal town was the staging ground for the 19th century narrow gauge railway that brought timber to rebuild San Francisco after the Great Earthquake, and was ground zero of the Back-to-the-Land movement in the 1960s.

Freestone Artisan Cheese

Contemporary Culture

Today, Freestone remains a small community of about 30 households, but welcomes thousands of visitors each year. Bread, wine, cheese, and our healing Japanese body therapy are all powered by the same natural force making Freestone, the California fermentation destination. Celebrating the renewed artisan food culture in one of wine country’s most distinct small towns. Humble but formidable, this Sonoma Coast paradise exemplifies the region’s commitment to craft and culture.

Wild Flour Bakery, almost across the street from us in Freestone, is one of the best bakeries in Northern California. People travel from all over the Bay Area to sample Jed Wallach’s inventive variety of breads, all produced in the wood-fired brick oven Fridays through Mondays—and sold nowhere else!

Blue Goat Shop sells handcrafted, artisanal cheese, wine, and art. Committed to connecting people with locally produced goods, Barbara and Christie are continuing the legacy of this famous cheese shop located in Historic Freestone.
